Daily thoughts - My first Animo Run

Last Sunday I woke up at 330 am to get ready to go to Mall of Asia in Manila. A few days ago I mentioned that I have signed up for Animo run.

I had to leave the house early since i live far from the city. It takes usually 1-2 hours to get to the city during rush hour but since it was a Sunday, I took my time getting ready. I double checked my bag to make sure I didnt leave any essentials behind. Wallet, beltbag, mp3, face towel, toilet paper, phone, extra socks, watch (dilapidated and strapless), and water bottle. By the time me and my little running buddy were ready, it was 430am. I also had to brush my teeth downstairs before we finally left. We hopped on a tricycle and took a special ride. I was pretty certain noone was planning to go to town that early. We were also lucky that there were tricycles available that early and on a Sunday.

We got to town around 5am. We rode a jeepney going to Crossing and it took forever before all the seats were occupied. Jeepneys normally dont leave if there are vacant seats. So we left around 510am. The ride was actually very fast. We were in the city by 540am, however I realized that the assembly for the run was at 530am. I kept thinking I wouldnt make it. We were at the mrt station at 550am and i was putting on my race bib just in case I do make it before the gun start.

When we got to Taft station of the mrt, we took a cab and we got to Mall of Asia around 620am. The run just started. The cab was in traffic so we got off and joined the people running. Yes, we didnt really start from the official starting line. The run had started and if we waited for the cars to move, we wouldnt have made it. So yeah we kinda cheated but it was like only a few meters away from the starting line though.
So me and my buddy didnt have time to leave our stuff at the baggage drop area. We just ran clad with heavy pants (that I was planning to take off prior to the run) and a duffel bag. My tiny companion carried the bag because she didnt want me to leave her behind and wait for me to finish.

runners..walking ;)

my new running buddy Jemarie

Most of the runners were obviously kids or students. Majority of them were walking too. We jogged however.

We couldve run faster but since we were out of time when we arrived at the venue, we were unprepared. Also, during the entire time we couldnt wait to use the toilet. I couldnt find one so I had to look around the SEaside area. Thank God I found a Starbucks nearby. On our way there, I saw this cute kitty on one of the closed restaurants.

Thank you STarbucks for letting us use your toilet!I have to admitI cant imagine using one of the portalets provided by the organizers.

We saw this huge tree by the seaside park.

My buddy looked relieved once we crossed the finish line.

Overall we had a good time. But the run did not really push me to try hard. It was in fact easier than the usual runs I do here just in our neighborhood. I will probably exert more effort on my next run. Also I will be ready and on time!

runners at the finish line

After the run, my good friend Jenny picked us up to have breakfast at Pancake House. She just got off from her duty at Manila Doctors Hospital. She treated us to tapsilog, tocilog, longsilog and hotcakes. That was a delicious breakfast!

And finally she gave us a lift to the train station. We passed by our university.

It was a tiring but very interesting and eventful day. I got home around 1pm. We spent so much time chatting during breakfast. I cant wait to join another running event and have a hearty meal with old friends afterwards.

Animo La Salle! Thank you to the organizers of the 8th Animo Run!

Daily thoughts - The PSE Bull Run Experience

I ran my first 10k  last December 11 2010. It was a great experience although I did have a hard time walking the following day. Still it kinda motivated me to try another 10k this month. I wanted more pain! hehe

I have been running 4-5x a week for the past 2 months. Most of my runs are slow paced and not really strenuous.  I do try to incorporate some uphill runs at least once a week. Also, I do long runs on Saturdays. Also, at least once a week, I do one hard workout testing what its like to go beyond my usual workout.
That involves speed and some uphill runs. Its amusing that people from my neighborhood ask me questions like if I ever do get tired or, why am I running. I just tell them of course I get tired but I  enjoy what Im doing. Then they give me this bewildered look like Im crazy. One woman even told me she wanted to run with me but is afraid that her muscles would get big.I asked her whether she wants to be fat or have well defined muscles instead. She said she couldnt make up her mind. So I told her to think about it then we can run together. Then before I took off to finish running, she said, can we just walk, running is too tiring. I just smiled and said you can walk but these shoes are made for running=)

My store is doing okay but I honestly am not making a lot of money from it. Im just having fun though. Most of my profit goes to daily expenses including catfood, kitty litter, my own personal needs and utility bills. However, I have made a promise to myself to allocate some of my hard earned money for my runs. The great thing about this run I signed up for was the affordable registration fee. It was only 50PHP less than the usual going rate but that discount is enough for me to get a kilo of dogfood.

I went to Megamall a few days before the race day and excitedly registered for the PSE Bull Run. The outlet ran out of singlet sizes and I had only Large and Extra Small to choose from. Obviously, I had to choose the latter.

trying on the singlet

On the day before the actual run, I had to sleep over at my friend's house. My house is too far from the venue and I dont have a car.  I just didnt want the same thing to happen like when I joined the animo run.
The accomodation was great. I had a good time with my friend's family and I stuffed my face with their good food too. The only problem was I wasnt sleepy. We managed to hit the sack around 1 AM. We got up at 4AM, had coffee and some bread. I still felt sleepy but also excited to run!

an orchestra i saw at Shangri La Plaza on my way to the MRT station

interesting tile work at my friend's house. i loved it.

the sink was made by my friend's husband. this used to be a pot for plants.
We spent quite some time looking for a place to park. But since my friend's house was very close to the venue, we had enough time to spare before the gun start. Err it wasnt a gun actually but a bell that they used to signal the start of the run.

I was able to warm up a bit before we got to the cordoned area of the start line. There were a lot of people who showed up.Some people were pushing us aside though and it was kinda annoying. I thought if these guys wanted to get ahead why dont they do it during the run itself right?

The run route for 10k can be found on the pinoyfitness website. There was a flyover included in the route and thats the part I didnt like although at first I was really excited over it since its my first time to run on one. You can view some good shots of this part of the run on this guy's flicker account.  The flyover was very dark and anyone can accidentally twist an ankle. I also noticed some shards of glass. Luckily I didnt get hurt on that portion of the route. The first 30minutes of the run was very hard. That uphill run took a toll on my knees and partly my lungs.

grainy photo on the flyover using my phone

The water station was a disaster by the way. Not a lot were strategically placed and there wasnt enough cups. I was lucky I was able to drink from a clean cup. I saw people cupping their hands to drink and a friend of mine said he saw someone get a used cup and rinsed it then reused it! I was like WTF!

It was kind of disappointing also that there were no markers to tell us that we have reached the 5km or 8km mark. I relied on my fitness tracker however it wasnt really reliable because there was a flyover as part of the run. It kinda messed up on my estimate of how to distribute my remaining energy.

The run back to the flyover again was manageable. This was after I finished the first 5km. I tried to follow my training technique of doing the first 2miles as easy, second 2 miles by pushing a bit, then the final 2 miles by going hard. During the last 1km or 800 meters though I thought I was beat. I was done. I knew that thats all I got left.

Then an older guy ran alongside me and said," hey your pace is good. Been running neck and neck with you for the most part of the run." I replied "Thanks but I m out." It was over for me and I dont have the energy left to finish the last stretch. Here is where he spewed some magic words to me. He said, "We can do it! last 800M, pain is temporary, glory is forever!" And with that, he sped off and left me by 400-500m. I was stunned! So I said to myself, if grandpa can do it, so can I! and I ran and gave whatever I had left and got to the finish line with the biggest grin on my face!

a fruit stand. they gave away a lot of bananas and the emcee kept announcing how many pieces were left.

they had this "shower" area provided by maynilad waters. Its not really meant for taking a shower but people had photos taken while they were drenched. I saw one guy hopping around happily and he had an ipod on. I wonder if his ipod is water proof.
me and my friends relaxing after the run

After the run, me and my friends had breakfast at Tropical Hut in Makati. Their 3 young boys even tagged along with us.
I had hotdog, toast and 2 sunny side eggs. coffee and 4 seasons drink. only 85PHP! also, my friends even insisted to pay for my to breakfast! they really spoiled me.
That run was fun although there are areas of improvement like adding more cups for the water station and putting markers. During my first 10k run, there were multiple water stations and they never ran out of cups. However the ING run was more dangerous because there were intersections with no marshalls. The PSE Bull Run had more marshalls and I even witnessed one arguing with a driver to ensure no one was ran over by a motorist. I wouldnt say that I liked seeing someone almost punch a driver to protect us from being hit by a car, but at least someone was there to somehow manage the traffic and prevent an accident. Although I did hear the marshall and the driver about to beat each other up over the traffic caused by the run. Hehehe Well i wonder whether they do inform motorists in advance that there is an upcoming race though.

Well we cant have it all. Im sure the organizers get feedback all the time after the event. But overall, I did enjoy this particular run. I forgot to include that the singlet quality was very nice and I didnt chafe or feel uncomfortable.

When I got home, I got excited to open my run loot bag!

Dapper inspecting the goodies inside : gatorade, century tuna and a banana!
The race results came out after one day. My run time slowed down by one minute compared to the previous one I had at the ING Run. But I am not really disappointed. That uphill run on the flyover may have taken me 4-5 more minutes longer compared to running on a flat terrain. So I think, without any conceit intended, that I have improved my run time! Yey!!

But again, I need to really go to bed at a decent time before a race. Last time I think I slept for 2 hours. This time only 3 hours. The run may have been okay but the next day I got sick. I was sick for 3 days.

There will be another race next Sunday and I am still thinking whether Ill sign up for the 10km or the 15km. Ill decide tomorrow. I dont know why but the harder it gets, the more appealing it becomes. =)

Daily thoughts - The Greentennial Run WOW Experience

As of 2010, I havent seen my College track and field teammates for over a decade. I posted some old photos on facebook around November and started tagging them away. It got my old friends excited and it eventually led to a reunion last December 18 2010. We all had a great time that day sharing stories at our coach's house. Some of my teammates gained a lot of weight whereas some look just the way they did 12 years ago. It was really amusing. We couldnt help but also laugh at the prospect of running from my coach's house all the way to the cycling station in Antipolo. We couldnt believe we used to do it every Sunday when we were younger. Now, just from her house to the main road is unthinkable. We all agreed we are no longer spring chickens! Then all of a sudden we started talking about having another reunion the following year 2011.

One of my friends asked us if we will be running in the upcoming Greentennial Run. La Salle will be turning 100 years old in the Philippines and alumni from La Salle Greenhills have organized a run scheduled on January 23 2011. As noted on their website:

"De La Salle Philippines and its network of Lasallian schools nationwide aims to raise one billion pesos for the One La Salle Scholarship Fund by our Hundredth anniversary in 2011.
The fund will be used to allow full scholarship equivalents (FSEs) to 20% of the student population in each of the 18 schools in the Philippines, including La Salle Green Hills, by the centennial in 2011. This will make it possible to share Lasallian education to deserving students, giving them a voice in our academic community and allowing for a richer dialogue that is reflective of what is true in our country."

I suggested it would be a good idea to have the run and a reunion at the same day. Some of my friends let out a frown. They said they havent ran for a very long time.I told them I have been jogging the past few years but I never seriously engaged in any races that were really competitive. I have just recently started to really run again. I told them about a recent run I had on December 11 and it was really fun! Joining the Greentennial run would be a great opportunity to have our "run reunion" at the same time donate to a worthy cause. My teammates said they would think about it.

As the day came nearer, I would post the countdown on our facebook group.

It was funny because originally we all agreed on running the 10km then my friends were asking if they could just run the 5k or the 3k. I told them the kids will be running those events. I told them how shameful it would be if a 9 year old kid ran faster than they did. Of course I was just teasing. But my friends said they didnt care. Running the 10km was too difficult according to them.

I waited for everyone to make their final decision on whether they wanted me to register for them or not. It took a week before I heard from my friends. I couldnt wait on everyone anymore because the 16th of January was the deadline. I went to R.O.X (Recreational Outdoor Exchange) at the Fort on the supposed last day of registration. I signed up for the 10k because the 5k and 15k were both closed. Not that I was planning to run the 15km but one of my friend was. The two other people I was about to register wanted to run the 5k but the slots were also closed. I asked them via sms whether they are okay with 10km instead. They said its fine but they said they will just walk. I got my stubs and I was told by the lady that I can pick up the race kits by January 19-22 at the same place. This is the first time Greentennial have organized a run so I kinda understood why they couldnt arrange the pick up and registration all on the same day. I figured it wouldnt be so much of a hassle for me to get the kits within the week.

But I got sick and I was able to get the kits only on the day before the race. I was upset also to find out that the sizes I ordered for the two guys werent available. I had received an earlier confirmation via email that as much as possible, they would give us the single sizes we have ordered. It was useless to argue at that point. I took whatever they offered and checked the envelopes to make sure that the race bib, time chip and safety pins were all in there. One of my friends who got her kit earlier said her envelope had no safety pins. Another annoying discovery was there was no race map inside the kit. All the previous runs I joined (Animo, ING and the PSE Bull Run) had everything. The right singlet size, the time chip, bib, info sheet and of course the map. But like I said, I gave the organizers leeway because its their first time to have this kind of event.

It was only my second time at R.O.X. I am not familiar with the Fort area and although I do know how to go there, I really dont know how to get back to the MRT station. The last time I was there to pick up the race kit for the PSE Bull Run, I paid a hefty 53PHP for a 7 minute cab ride from the Fort to the Ayala MRT station. I had no choice because I did not know where to find a jeepney or a bus from the R.O.X area. Going there was easy but leaving was tricky if you are commuting. This time I was not willing to part with my 50PHP so I took whatever jeepney I saw. It was a disaster. I travelled all the way to Taguig and paid 10PHP. I have never been to that area before and honestly I was a little scared. I found a jeepney that read MRT so I got on and paid 7PHP. I made it to the Magallanes MRT. From there I paid 11PHP to get to Guadalupe. The area below the Magallanes MRT was already very dark at 8PM. In hindsight, I regret not taking the cab ride because by the time I got to my friend's house in Guadalupe, I was soaked in sweat and I was exhausted from all the walking. Just an idea of the disaster trip I had:

I stayed over at my friend's house for the night. We ran 2 weeks previously at the PSE Bull Run  and they have told me beforehand Im welcome to stay again. As usual, me and my friends werent able to sleep well. I dont know if it is the excitment but I slept for 2 hours and my friends slept for probably 3 hours only.

I got up at 4am and my friends woke up a few minutes after that. We hurried to the venue at 28th street at the Fort because the assembly time was 5:00 AM. Gun start for the 15km (which my friend was running) was at 530AM. We were still in the car at 510AM. We finally found a place to park near the NBC Tent at around 525AM. My friend had to ask his wife to park the car because he had to be at the cordoned area already. His wife and I were running the 10km, we still had ample time to warm up. The problem was I still had the 3kits for the 3 other people I registered. Fortunately, they got their kits just in time before the run started for the 10km. There was a huge turn out of participants. The run was really a big event! There were photographers everywhere, even the pep squad with their drummers were there. I didnt bring my camera along so I borrowed these photos from the Greentennial Facebook fan page (http://www.facebook.com/greentennialrun). The credits are in the caption.

The route for the 10km was  like the one in the PSE Bull run. Unfortunately the map isnt too clear when you check it on the Greentennial website.

10km (Jay R Brun Photography)
There were 4 categories. 3km, 5km, 10km and 15km. The gun start were as follows :

5:30 - 15k
5:40 - 10k
5:50 - 5k
6:00 - 3k

There are probably thousands of photos on the Greentennial fan page so I just borrowed a few since it would be better to just go through the photos on facebook. The shots are amazing and I havent even seen all of it. There were a lot of photographers present and I am yet to check out all the albums being uploaded daily.

I ran the 10km again for this event. I personally think I did better than the last time I ran two weeks ago. My pace seemed  to be the same as that during the PSE Bull run although I felt more confident going the flyover as compared last time. Also I noticed that the flyover seem well lit on this run.

Other things worth noting were the ample water stations and markers. They had powerade and water and enough cups! I cant help but remember that on the PSE Bull Run some people had to scoop water using their hands or worse a used plastic cup! On this race also, there were Marshalls everywhere and some of them were even cheering us on. There was a part on the loop though that I thought I got lost and have joined the 15km runners. I tried to check the guy running ahead of me if he also had the pink and orange yarn. I saw he did so I reassured myself I was on the right path.

The most fascinating part of this run was when photographers asked us to "jump". I was not able to jump because it was already on the last stretch of the run and my legs were really tired. I did see a couple of runners happily "jumping" for these photographers though.

There was also a part on the run where the Manila Water has installed a "shower" for runners.

When I got to the finish line, I was surprised when one of the ladies ran after me to give me a medal. For the 10km, 5km and 3km, only the first 100 finishers will get a medal. I wasnt expecting one so I was really thrilled!
Me and my friend Dr. Pam.
I also bumped into a good friend of mine who is now a Doctor specializing in Pediatrics. She has joined several half marathons but opted to run the 10km in this event . After we finished stretching, we looked around to find a booth for the drinks and the loot bags.

The line to the giveaway took forever. I think we were in line for 30 minutes. Although it wasnt really an issue since I was with my friends and we had a good time catching up while drenched in sweat. I sent my feedback to the organizers and they were very pleasant and accomodating about it. . They had areas to improve on but overall, this event was a success. I havent been to a lot of races here but this definitely was a very good one. I was really impressed.

Another good news for me was that I improved my time by 2 minutes. Not a lot but for me that is already a feat. I hope to improve more in the coming weeks before I run my first 10miles and eventually a half marathon.

After the event we went over to my friend's place to have breakfast.

Post Run Breakfast
I was really exhausted but I had a grand time seeing my old friends and also being part of a historical event.

Good Job Greentennial Run organizers!!  I hope this is just the start of a series of other races!

Weeee! Animo La Salle! =)
